This is a relatively straightforward repair job, requiring careful gluing of the original piece, and exact matching of the grain with the replacement splice.  The buttplate was annealed, peened back to shape, and then aged again to match the surrounding patina.  In this case, the owner chose not to have the dent in toe of the buttplate filled with weld.  Once again, this shows how imperative it is to carefully package and insure each piece you choose to ship.
